Most people see the finished elevator. The polish Most people see the finished elevator. The polished panels. The lighting. The details. What they don’t see is everything behind it.This is where it starts.Raw equipment. Heavy tools. Precision work.
The kind of machinery that doesn’t care about trends—only accuracy.Every hole, every cut, every adjustment… it all happens here before anything ever makes it into a cab. It’s not glamorous.
But it’s the difference between something that looks good… and something that’s built to last.At Draper, the craftsmanship isn’t just in the final product—

The $10,000 Elevator Crack That Could Have Been Pr The $10,000 Elevator Crack That Could Have Been PreventedOver the past few months, I’ve been called in to review several projects with the same issue: a broken glass elevator panel.Glass is one of the most beautiful finishes in a cab—it adds depth, reflectivity, and a clean architectural look that’s hard to replicate. But when it breaks, it becomes a major headache.Replacement panels often take 8–10 weeks and can run $100 per square foot before shipping, fabrication, and installation. A small crack can quickly turn into a $10,000 repair. It gets worse with custom back-painted or printed glass. Years later, matching the exact color can be nearly impossible—especially if manufacturers have changed their processes. One facility I reviewed had brand colors printed across every panel. The glass cracked at the handrail mount, and they couldn’t recreate a perfect match. What should’ve been a repair turned into a much bigger problem—all of it avoidable with one simple design decision:Separate the glass at the handrail elevation.A thin stainless steel accent panel can divide the glass into two sections. From normal viewing height, it’s almost invisible—but it dramatically reduces risk.In another case, a 48” x 102” panel (34+ sq ft) had a 2” crack in the corner—making the entire panel unusable. If it had been split at the handrail, only ~9 sq ft would need replacement.Mounting handrails through full-height glass is possible—but requires careful planning:
• Every drilled hole is a stress point
• High-traffic buildings increase impact risk
• Tenants move carts, bikes, furniture
• Handrails must never contact glass, even if loosenedGlass is a stunning material—just make sure it’s designed to last.— Jared Giblin, President

After completing the modernization of the four pub After completing the modernization of the four public elevators at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse, Draper was invited back to develop design concepts for the judges’ elevators.Following a behind-the-scenes tour of the courtrooms and learning the history behind many of the building’s architectural details, we created and presented three cab concepts inspired by the courthouse’s heritage and design language. These elevators will transport federal judges before and after presiding over some of the nation’s most significant cases—so the design and craftsmanship needed to reflect that responsibility.#DraperElevatorInteriors
