Location: John Joseph Moakley Courthouse Public Elevators, Boston, MAAbout the Project:
The Moakley Courthouse serves as headquarters for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The building houses two appeals courtrooms, 19 district courtrooms, 6 magistrate’s courtrooms, 42 judge’s chambers, a law library, offices for the U.S. attorney, and extensive facilities to support the operations of the federal courts. The total square foot floor area is 750,000 and spans 10 floors. The courthouse sits prominently on the waterfront and is considered to be a vital piece of the development of Boston’s seaport district.Scope of the Project:
Draper partnered with Metro Elevator to complete a four (4) car modernization of the public elevators. This project included a very detailed submittal, review, and design process due to the building’s historic significance. Each finish and architectural detail reflects careful thought that meets building code standards, along with tying in details from the building’s original and unique construction. 100 Chestnut is the signature life science building of North River Leerink’s new Brickbottom District, which opened its doors in 2023. This 200,000 SF LEED Platinum-certified laboratory and office building offers a rare opportunity for pioneering minds to shape Somerville’s next life science hub. 100 Chestnut will be a best-in-class facility that sets the standard for the reimagined Brickbottom District as a 24/& destination where scientific innovation meets wellness. The purpose-built project is designed around green spaces for community gatherings and events, premium food & beverage vendors, and public art installations. Only 7 minutes from Kendall Square, 100 Chestnut is connected to the life science epicenter via the Green Line T and the Community Path.Scope of the Project:
The innovative design and lighting highlight the three (3) custom elevators at 100 Chestnut with acoustical wood slat rear walls that feature linear LED back-lighting at the corners. The slat walls match a gorgeous main lobby. After completing fit outs with Thyssen and Kone Draper partnered with another major elevator company Otis installing nine (9) elevator cab interiors at Parcel G. The six (6) passenger elevators feature a matching rear wall to the surround lobby wall panels in the elevator vestibule. After completing the modernization of the four public elevators at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse, Draper was invited back to develop design concepts for the judges’ elevators.Following a behind-the-scenes tour of the courtrooms and learning the history behind many of the building’s architectural details, we created and presented three cab concepts inspired by the courthouse’s heritage and design language.These elevators will transport federal judges before and after presiding over some of the nation’s most significant cases—so the design and craftsmanship needed to reflect that responsibility.#DraperElevatorInteriors

The elevators were thoughtfully designed to tell stories while upholding building standards. Located in the heart of Boston’s Financial District, 28 State Street is a 40-story Class A office tower. In 2022, Consigli Construction completed a major lobby repositioning, transforming the building’s entry to reflect a sleek, modern aesthetic. As the renovation neared completion, Cushman & Wakefield engaged Draper Elevator Interiors to design and build custom elevator interiors that would align with the upgraded lobby. Jared Giblin presented two design concepts to ownership, and once a concept was selected, Draper’s design was incorporated into the modernization specification written by Michael Blades & Associates. Otis Elevator is currently modernizing all 17 elevators, including the installation of destination dispatch technology.Scope of Project:
Draper provided full design-build services, fabricating and installing 17 custom elevator cab interiors. The standout feature is a large rear wall mirror with a gold striped interlayer, complemented by custom LED lighting that delivers a dramatic effect. The ceiling and side walls incorporate finishes found throughout the building’s newly renovated lobby and common areas. Each time the cab doors open, the result is an immediate “wow factor”—a bold blend of lighting and premium materials.
